Sri Lanka’s southern and eastern coastlines are home to some of the finest surf breaks in the Indian Ocean, with world-class waves attracting surfers from around the globe throughout the year. Arugam Bay on the east coast is internationally celebrated for its powerful, consistent right-hander at the Main Point and its relaxed, welcoming surf culture, while Weligama, Hikkaduwa, and Mirissa on the south coast offer gentler, more forgiving waves ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. Surf schools operated by experienced, safety-conscious instructors are available at all major breaks, with rental equipment suitable for all board types and skill levels.

White Water Rafting

The Kelani River at Kitulgala, set in a lush jungle gorge about 90 kilometres east of Colombo, is Sri Lanka’s premier white-water rafting destination and the location where the Academy Award-winning film The Bridge on the River Kwai was partly filmed. The river offers a series of exciting Class 3-4 rapids with thrilling names such as ‘End of the World,’ ‘Generator Rock,’ and ‘Killer Falls,’ providing an adrenaline-charged experience well-suited to beginners and those with prior rafting experience. All sessions are guided by certified rafting instructors with extensive river knowledge, and full safety equipment, including helmets, life jackets, and self-bailing rafts, is provided as standard.

Sri Lanka is one of the premier birdwatching destinations in Asia, with over 230 resident species, including 35 birds found nowhere else in the world, making it a paradise for birders of all levels. The island’s diversity of habitats – tropical rainforests, highland cloud forests, dry-zone scrub, coastal wetlands, and paddy land ecosystems- supports a range of species in a relatively compact area. Sri Lanka’s coastal waters are home to a spectacular underwater world of coral reefs, historic shipwrecks, and a diversity of tropical marine life, making it one of Asia’s most rewarding snorkelling and scuba diving destinations. Pigeon Island Marine National Park near Trincomalee offers some of the finest reef snorkelling on the island, with pristine hard corals, reef sharks, sea turtles, and an abundance of colourful tropical fish visible in crystal-clear shallow waters. For certified divers, deeper sites along the south coast and around Bar Reef near Kalpitiya offer encounters with whale sharks, manta rays, and the rich pelagic life of the open ocean.

Turtle Conservation Experiences

Sri Lanka’s beaches are nesting grounds for five of the world’s seven species of sea turtles, including the endangered green, leatherback, loggerhead, olive ridley, and hawksbill turtle, making the island one of the most important sea turtle conservation sites in Asia. Our turtle conservation experiences take guests to certified coastal hatcheries and protected nesting beaches, where dedicated conservationists work year-round to protect nests, care for injured turtles, and raise awareness about the threats facing these ancient reptiles. Guests may participate in responsible nest protection activities, observe hatchlings being prepared for release, and learn about the science of sea turtle biology and the global conservation challenges they face.

Whale & Dolphin Watching Expeditions

Between November and April, the deep waters off the southern coast near Mirissa and Dondra are frequented by blue whales, as well as sperm whales, fin whales, and large superpods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins. Our whale and dolphin watching excursions are conducted by experienced skippers and marine naturalists aboard comfortable, well-equipped vessels, with emphasis on responsible viewing that minimises disturbance to the animals. From April to September, the northeast coast around Trincomalee offers its own spectacular season of whale watching, with regular sightings of blue and sperm whales in the calm offshore waters.
