The Mist Country

Adam’s Peak

Best Time to Visit: December-May

Adam’s Peak, known as ‘Sacred Footprint,’ is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Asia, revered simultaneously by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians for the mysterious footprint-shaped impression at its 2,243-metre summit. Pilgrimage season runs from December to April, during which tens of thousands of devotees and travellers make the pre-dawn ascent of the steep, light-strung stairway to witness the sunrise and the pyramid-shaped shadow the peak casts across the morning clouds below.

Nuwara Eliya

Best Time to Visit: March-April

Known as ‘Little England,’ Nuwara Eliya is a highland town whose colonial architecture, tea estates, rose gardens, and cool climate give it an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka. The town was developed as a retreat for British planters and colonial administrators during the 19th century, and its heritage is still visible in its bungalows, post office, racecourse and golf club. The landscape is a patchwork of tea fields, eucalyptus forests and vegetable farms, making it one of the most photogenic settings.

Horton Plains

Best Time to Visit: January – March

Horton Plains National Park is a beautiful highland plateau blanketed in cloud forest, open grasslands, and silent mountain streams. This park is home to the World’s End viewpoint, where the plateau drops suddenly by nearly 900 metres to the lowland jungle below, a sight that is both exhilarating and deeply moving. Baker’s Falls, a picturesque cascade in the heart of the plateau, and the rare wildlife of the cloud forest, including sambar deer, purple-faced langurs, and endemic birds, add to the park’s extraordinary appeal.

Haputale

Best Time to Visit: January – April

Haputale is a small highland town perched at over 1,400 metres on the southern escarpment of the central mountains, offering some of the most spectacular panoramic views in Sri Lanka. On clear days, travellers can see across the southern coastal plains to the Indian Ocean, a perspective that makes the town feel like the edge of the world. The surrounding area is blanketed in some of the island’s most beautiful tea estates, including the historic Dambatenne Tea Factory established by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1890.

Ella

Best Time to Visit: January – April

The iconic Nine Arch Bridge, a masterpiece of colonial-era railway engineering framed by lush tea gardens, has become one of the most photographed images in the country. Hiking trails to Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock offer views across the surrounding valleys, while the growing collection of mountain boutique hotels, cafes, and adventure activities make it a destination in its own right.
