Haputale is a small highland town perched at over 1,400 metres on the southern escarpment of the central mountains, offering some of the most spectacular panoramic views in Sri Lanka. On clear days, travellers can see across the southern coastal plains to the Indian Ocean, a perspective that makes the town feel like the edge of the world. The surrounding area is blanketed in some of the island’s most beautiful tea estates, including the historic Dambatenne Tea Factory established by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1890.
