Velvet Lanka Tours

Kataragama is one of the most sacred multi-faith pilgrimage destinations, venerated by Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims, and is one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable expressions of spiritual coexistence. The complex centres on the Maha Devale, a shrine to the god Kataragama and the Kiri Vehera Stupa, an ancient Buddhist dagoba. Pilgrims arrive throughout the year, but the Esala festival in July and August draws thousands of devotees who participate in firewalking ceremonies, kavadi dances, and water-cutting rituals.
